The A. David Mazzone Research Awards Program will fund a series of collaborative and innovative cancer research, career development, community outreach, and training projects to address a range of needs in prostate cancer and Lupron-treatable diseases.

Mazzone Pre- and Post-Doctoral Training Program Awards will support established, NIH-funded institutional training programs which provide pre-doctoral and/or post-doctoral research training opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing research careers in biomedical, behavioral, and clinical prostate cancer research. This mechanism will provide additional training slots to Training Program Directors or PIs who, through their well-developed, high quality programs, will select the trainees and develop a curriculum of study and research experiences necessary to provide research training. The award will offset the cost of stipends or salary for the appointed trainees. Attention should be given to recruiting trainees from racial or ethnic groups underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and nursing sciences; as well as individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Mentored research projects may focus on any aspect of prostate cancer research including but not limited to basic science, treatment, prevention, disparities, or care.


One award for $50,000 per year for up to two years ($100,000 total in direct costs) is available in this category. The next projected award period is July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2014.

Funding Agency: The funding agency for the program is a non-federal grant from the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Funding was derived from a pool of unclaimed funds from the settlement in 2004 of a class action suit against TAP Pharmaceuticals. The class action suit was related to marketing and sales practices for the prostate cancer drug Lupron.

The Mazzone Awards Program is a DFCI sponsored award, administered jointly through DF/HCC and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.


Applicants must be a member of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and be a Director or PI of an NIH-funded grant or project that is centered on or has a training program component (for example T32, R25, or Program Project [P- or U-series] with a training program). Directors/PIs should possess the skills, knowledge, track-record, and institutional resources necessary to carry out the proposed research training program. The Director/PI at the institution will be responsible for the selection and appointment of trainees and for the overall direction, management, and administration of the program.

Trainee Appointment Criteria
Trainees appointed to the training program must have the opportunity to carry out supervised biomedical or behavioral research with the primary objective of developing or extending their research skills and knowledge in preparation for a research career.

(A) Pre-doctoral Trainees must have received a baccalaureate degree by the beginning date of the grant, and must be training at the post-baccalaureate level and enrolled in a program leading to a Ph.D.
(B) Post-doctoral Trainees must have received a Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., DNP, or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution, by the beginning date of the grant.

Employees or subcontractors of a government entity or for-profit private industry are not eligible. Exceptions include applicants holding full-time positions at a veterans' hospital or national laboratory (e.g., Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) in the United States. Members of the Programís Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) are ineligible to apply.

  • Application Form: To be completed online by the Principal Investigator when submitting your proposal to the Application Form Web Page. Provide a 250-word abstract description of the project in laymenís terms.
  • Proposal: The proposal should describe the overall objectives of the training program to which this award would be applied if funded, the core educational/curriculum requirements, mentoring plan, the potential trainee pool, the faculty mentor pool and their qualifications and expertise, the trainee recruitment and selection process and criteria, and the mechanism and track-record for successful recruitment of under-represented minorities. Maximum of 3 pages of text including figures. References and budget pages are not included in this page limit. Appendix material will be accepted with the following restrictions: a two-page limit of relevant supporting text or figures; only manuscripts that have been accepted for publication with the journal acceptance letter.
  • Biosketches. Include NIH biosketches for PI(s) and faculty mentors.
  • Budget: Budget requests (direct costs only) and budget justifications should be submitted as NIH 398 form with major divisions of funds (personnel, equipment, supplies, other, etc.; with adequate rationale). Separate budget pages must be submitted for each individual institution requesting funds. Funds will be distributed directly from DFCI to sub-recipients. A composite budget that includes the total costs of the project should also be included when multiple institutions are involved in the project. Funds may not be used to support PIís or faculty mentorís salaries. Funds may be used for direct research expenses only, which may include salary and benefits of trainees (graduate students or post-doctoral fellows), research/laboratory supplies, and travel associated with education or presenting research findings.

Format: Items 2 Ė 4 (above) must be compiled and submitted as a single PDF file. Please include the PIís name, project title, and page number at the top of each page. The 3-page research proposal should include an overview of the training program, specific aims, and training strategy. Use standard size paper (8 ĹĒ x 11Ē), Arial or Helvetica font, 11 points or larger with margins Ĺ inch or larger (top, bottom, left, and right). Figures and legends must be of legible size and legible when printed in black and white.

The scientific review group will address and consider each of the following criteria in assigning the applicationís overall score, weighting them as appropriate for each application.

Training Program: Are the objectives, design, and direction of the proposed research training program appropriate? Does the proposed program provide suitable training for the levels of trainees being proposed and the area of science to be supported by the program? Is the quality of proposed course contents and training experience appropriate for all levels of trainees to be included in the program? Are inter- and multi-disciplinary and inter-professional research training opportunities presented which appropriately utilize novel concepts, approaches, methodologies, or technologies?

Program Director and Faculty: Are the qualifications, dedication, and previous student recruitment record of the Principal Investigator and all participating faculty appropriate for the programís needs?

Past Training Record: Is the past research training record of the program, the Program Director, and designated preceptors/mentors appropriate? How successful are former trainees in seeking further career development and establishing productive scientific careers? Is there evidence of successful completion of programs, receipt of subsequent fellowships and/or career awards, further training appointments, and similar accomplishments? What is the track record of proposed mentors in similar research training programs? Is there a record in retaining health-professional post-doctorates for at least two years in research training or other research activities, if appropriate? Has the program demonstrated success in recruitment and career development of underserved minorities?

Institutional Training Environment, Commitment, and Resources: Is the quality of the research environment for the proposed research training program appropriate? Is the level of institutional commitment, quality of available facilities, courses, research, and research training support suitable?

Recruitment and Retention Plans for Trainees: Are the recruitment and selection plans for students adequately developed and appropriate? Are high-quality students available and identified? In addition, are there adequate methods for retaining promising students in the program and methods for tracking students?

Program Evaluation: Are there adequate procedures for evaluating the effectiveness and impact of the program on the students involved?

Additional Review Considerations:

Budget: The reasonableness of the proposed budget and the requested period of support in relation to the proposed research.

Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research: Assessment of the applicant's plans for training in the responsible conduct of research on the basis of the appropriateness of topics, format, amount and nature of faculty participation, and frequency and duration of instruction.

Grantees must submit annual progress reports to DF/HCC including detailed narrative updates, accrual reports (if applicable), and expenditure reports. Progress will be measured through the review of progress reports. Generally, progress that approximately meets benchmarks,
