Massachusetts General Hospital
Massachusetts General Hospital was founded in the early 19th century and, like HMS, has been a focus of cancer research since the field emerged as a distinct entity. With BWH, it is one of the two founding members of Partners Health Care, Inc., one of the largest consortium health providers in New England and the largest in the Boston area. MGH is a full-service hospital of about 850 beds that maintains a full spectrum of cancer services and is home to a large segment of the HMS Department of Radiation Therapy, chaired by Dr. Jay Loeffler. This MGH unit also houses an NCI-funded proton beam research center and a major program dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of tumor cell biology. MGH is a center of excellence in imaging research and cancer genetics.
