Request for Proposals: Center for Community Health and Health Equity Breast Health Promotion Grant Program

Request for Proposals (RFP): Breast Health Promotion Grant Program

Overview: BWH Center for Community Health and Health Equity

The BWH Center for Community Health and Health Equity (CCHHE) partners with community organizations, neighborhood residents, and institutions across multiple sectors to improve the health of low-income women and families through wide-reaching community programs not typically undertaken by academic medical centers. Women’s health represents an important priority area for the CCHHE

Family and Community Health Programs. Through education, resource provision, and health promotion, the CCHHE is dedicated to addressing disparities across a broad range of women’s health outcomes, including breast cancer.

Data shows a significant disparity between black and white women in breast cancer related deaths. Although white women have a higher rate of breast cancer than black women, black women are more likely to die of breast cancer (CDC 2010). This disparity may be partially explained by significant gaps in breast cancer education, prevention, and treatment. The goal of the outreach program is to address these gaps by implementing targeted education and awareness programs at a community level.

Breast Health Promotion Grant Program

The goal of this grant program is to provide support to community organizations to implement breast health promotion programs, specifically focusing on women from underserved populations. Community organizations are requested to use the grants to provide breast health information and education to women ages 18 and older through the development of language-specific education materials and/or peer education and outreach programs.

Materials created should target at-risk populations, particularly immigrant women, and should promote periodic mammogram screening. Program funds can also be used for training and supporting the work of peer educators focusing on breast cancer prevention in immigrant communities.

The BWH Center for Community Health and Health Equity will fund up to 4 grant awards for up to $20,000 each to support breast health promotion activities for a period of one year. Grants may be renewed for an additional year contingent on the availability of funds and provider performance.
