Student Training

Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) is committed to building the most diverse and well-trained cancer research workforce in the world. Our member institutions— Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Boston, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and Massachusetts General Hospital—offer a variety of innovative programs and training opportunities to attract the best and the brightest to careers in cancer research, treatment, and care.

The CURE program introduces high-school and undergraduate students from underrepresented minority populations to the world of cancer research in real research settings, to expand and extend their interest in basic, clinical and/or population science research. Students choose between a nine week or two year track.

The Four Directions Summer Research Program (FDSRP) is an eight week program for undergraduate students with a demonstrated commitment to the health of Native American communities. Students are assigned a medical school faculty mentor who will work closely with the student to ensure completion of a project.

The Harvard Division of Medical Sciences offers the Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Program (SHURP), a ten week program for currently enrolled Harvard undergraduate students belonging to minority groups underrepresented in the sciences. Research opportunities are available in a variety of biological and biomedical sciences.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Center of Excellence in Genomic Science (CEGS) provides interdisciplinary research and training opportunities for recent college graduates and post-baccalaureate students from underrepresented minority groups. The program offers a scientifically diversified training opportunity to students who are preparing to apply to graduate programs in genomics or a related field.

Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center institutions provide an array of predoctoral and postdoctoral training opportunities across the basic, clinical and population sciences. These programs provide access to cutting edge research in a wide variety of environments.
