Core Facilities

DF/HCC research requires substantial resources to fulfill the founding vision of the Center. To provide these resources across the Center, Core Facilities (“Cores”) were established. Cores are central laboratories, each capable of performing a specific set of experimental functions that enable DF/HCC investigators to perform experiments faster, more accurately and at an affordable price.

Principles of Core Designation

Cores support research efforts of DF/HCC members and provide services that advance cancer research. DF/HCC members have priority access to Cores and often receive reduced rates for services. Non-DF/HCC members are charged the full costs of Core services; CCSG funds cannot be used to subsidize non-DF/HCC work.

Core Administration

The Associate Director for Core Facilities, Dr. Jerome Ritz, is a nationally recognized leader in clinical cancer research and a member of the Executive Committee. The Deputy Director for Core Facilities, Dr. Edward Giovannucci, is a recognized leader in cancer epidemiology and works closely with Dr. Ritz to oversee and provide advice to all DF/HCC Cores. Dr. Giovannucci is also a member of the Executive Committee.

Technical expertise for Core administration is provided by the Steering Committee for Core Activities (SCCA), a subcommittee of the Executive Committee and Administration. The SCCA is responsible for quality assurance of Core services and facilitates interactions of Cores with programs.

Cores serve DF/HCC members across all DF/HCC institutions and help facilitate interaction between investigators. Cores can:

  • Offer DF/HCC investigators specialized services or expertise not commonly available to them
  • Provide services or expert advice at a lower cost than could be obtained from other sources
  • Become a focal point of activity, bringing together scientists from widely disparate disciplines

Core Locations

DF/HCC Cores are located at any of the seven different DF/HCC member institutions. In some cases, individual Cores are located at more than one member institution.
