The Federal Policy (Common Rule) for the Protection of Human Subjects requires that each institution "engaged" in federally-supported human subject research have an "Assurance" of protection for human subjects. The Assurance formalizes the institution's commitment to protect human subjects. The DFCI assurance number is FWA00001121 and is valid through 2012.

DFCI IRBs (Institutional Review Board) are registered with the OHRP (Office for the Human Research Protection). At the present time, registration is required only for IRBs and IECs (Institutional Ethics Committees) designated under an OHRP Federalwide Assurance of Protection for Human Subjects.
