Research Abstract

My research interests involve using population-based studies of genetic, circulating, and tumor biomarkers to investigate the role of inflammation and infections in carcinogenesis. In addition to my work in the Harvard-based Health Professionals Follow-up Study and Physicians' Health Study, I collaborate extensively on prostate and penile tumor biomarker studies with clinicians in the Department of Urology at Örebro University Hospital in Sweden. I have utilized data from a large Swedish population-based case-control study (CaPS) and the Physicians’ Health Study to study genetic and circulating biomarkers related to inflammation and prostate cancer outcomes. Supported by a Career Development Award from the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Prostate Cancer SPORE, I am conducting a tissue-based study of predictors and outcomes associated with inflammation and focal atrophy in prostate tumor specimens in large Swedish and US cohorts. I am also a co-investigator in the Scandinavian Prostate Cancer Group 4 (SPCG-4) study, a randomized trial of radical prostatectomy versus watchful waiting initiated 1989.
