Research Abstract

My primary research interests and clinical work focuses on care provided to lung cancer patients, particularly patients who are members of ethnic and racial minority groups. I am interested in all areas of care delivery and feel that community engagement and assessment is of utmost importance. Cancer patients are vulnerable and knowledge about the distribution of symptoms both physical and psychological is invaluable in the assessment of disparities.

My current research interests focus on racial disparities in lung cancer, and on improving access to care for underserved cancer patients. Currently I am involved with the Lung Cancer Disparities Center run by Dr. David Williams at the Harvard School of Public Health as an co- investigator on multiple projects including (1) sequencing somatic mutations in African-Americans with lung cancer. (2) Examining socioeconomic changes in the NCI CanCORS data set. (3) Examining the relative effects of socioeconomic status on survival in lung cancer. In addition am currently running an outreach oncology clinic as in a Federally Qualified health center in Roxbury, MA. This program is an innovative project with the aim of reducing disparities in cancer mortality locally.
