Research Abstract
Dr. Mara Schonberg, MD, MPH, is an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School as well as a researcher and staff physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Division of General Medicine and Primary Care. Her research focuses on health promotion and disease prevention among older adults. Her work has focused on delivery of preventive health care to older adults including, 1) decision-making and outcomes of mammography screening among older women; 2) physician counseling around mammography, exercise, and joint replacement surgery to older adults; and 3) examining how older women value preventive health services and trust medical recommendations about disease prevention. With support from a National Research Service Award, she examined what factors influence women over 80 years to be screened with mammography and how physicians counsel elderly women about mammography. With support from an NIA K23 grant, she is now examining the pschological impact and decision-making of older women after an abnormal mammogram.
