My research focus is AIDS-related cancers in general and Kaposi's sarcoma in particular. Since degradation of the extracellular matrix by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and angiogenesis are important in the development of metastases, inhibitors of MMPs and angiogenesis may be of therapeutic value in the treatment of KS. I am the national chair of two NIH protocols investigating the use of an MMP inhibitor and an agiogenesis inhibitor respectively in Kaposi's sarcoma. I am the prinicipal investigator at the BIDMC unit of the AIDS Malignancy consortium/NCI/NIH whose purpose is to develop new strategies for the treatment of AIDS-related cancers. I would like to foster collaborations with basic scientists in the Longwood area; two such collaborations produced recent publications- KS-associated herpes virus relicates in peripheral blood cells of KS patients (J Exp Med) and KS cells may be of lymphatic cell origin (J Invest Derm).Publications
