Reduction of Cancer Risk and DisparitiesResearch Abstract
S. Bryn Austin, ScD, is Director of Fellowship Research Training in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Children’s Hospital in Boston. She is also Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Assistant Professor in Society, Human Development and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. With expertise in the behavioral sciences and social epidemiology, her research includes examination of social and physical environmental influences on cancer risk behaviors in adolescents and young adults. Her areas of specialization include overweight, disordered weight control behaviors, tobacco and alcohol use, and other behaviors in adolescents and young adults with consequences for cancer and chronic disease risk. Much of her work relates to health disparities, particularly sexual orientation group disparities in health exposures and outcomes. She has been the PI of a number of funded grants to study the distribution and determinants of sexual orientation group disparities in health, including grants from the American Cancer Society (“Breast and Colon Cancer in Lesbian and Bisexual Women: A Prospective Study” RSGT-07-172-01-CPPB) and the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (“Sexual Orientation and Health Disparities in Adolescence” R01 HD045763).Publications
