Prostate Cancer

Research Abstract

My clinical and research focus is personalizing treatment of men with prostate cancer and optimizing their outcomes. The major areas of focus include:

1) Optimizing Risk Stratification and Treatment Selection: Working with Dr. Anthony DAmico, I analyze large cross sectional databases to identify risk factors for recurrence, cancer-specific death and all-cause death and to determine which combination of patient, tumor and treatment characteristics would optimize cancer control while minimally impacting health-related quality of life.

2) Technical Innovations in the Delivery of Radiation: Working with Dr. Robert Cormack in physics, collaborators in radiology, and outside collaborators in engineering, we seek to reduce the side-effects of prostate brachytherapy by using additional imaging and novel devices to decrease the dose delivered to the urethra and rectum.

3) Translational/Genetic Research: Using archived prostate tissue at the DFCI/BWH and the Harvard School of Public Health, we are identifying biomarkers for prostate cancer recurrence and molecular pathways that can potentially be targeted to minimize the risk of recurrence. This work is being done with Dr. Philip Kantoff and in collaboration with Dr. Massimo Loda of molecular pathology and Dr. Jing Ma of the HSPH. In addition, I have funding from the RTOG to analyze tissue from 2 of their randomized trials in collaboration with Dr. Anthony Zietman of MGH.
