Research Abstract
My research is focused on the molecular genetics of hereditary and sporadic colorectal neoplasia. I am a member of the NIH-funded Colon Cancer Family Regsitry (Colon CFR), an infrastructure consortium collecting material for investigations of genetic factors in colorectal neoplasia. I are currently involved in characterizing the role of mismatch repair gene defects in cancer predisposition in a population-based study of more than 30,000 colorectal cancer patients. This consortium is also beginning to use these resources in deletion mapping and linkage dysequilibrium studies to identify novel hereditary cancer loci. A second line of research is the investigation of molecular markers of clinical outcome in colorectal neoplasia trials. I am currently studying the relationship between mismatch repair status and clinical outcome in Stage III colon cancer patients treated with 5-Fluorouracil +/- Irinotecan. I am also investigating predictors of clinical response in a colorectal adenoma chemoprevention trial using celecoxib. Finally, I am working with several local basic science investigators in the characterization of mouse models of pancreatic cancer.
