Research Abstract
Dr. Gelber co-developed the Q-TWiST method (Quality-adjusted Time Without Symptoms of disease or Toxicity of treatment) for incorporating quality-of-life considerations into treatment comparisons. This quality-adjusted survival technique provides a framework to balance the benefits of disease control against theburdens of treatment side effects using threshold utility analysis and patient preferences. The method has been applied to treatment comparisons for patients with breast cancer, rectal cancer, HIV infection, brain tumors, childhood acute myeloid leukemia and melanoma.
Dr. Gelber's research includes interpretations of meta-analysis and evaluations of successful treatments for childhood cancers. In addition, he is responsible for the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of large scale randomized clinical trials evaluating treatments for breast cancer, pediatric malignancies and perinatal transmission of HIV.
