Research Abstract

My research interests include the application of cytology and cytologic methods, including fine needle aspiration and Pap testing, to cancer diagnosis and treatment response. Particular interests include cervical cancer, mesothelioma, sarcoma, lung cancer, thyroid cancer, and prostate cancer. We have demonstrated the value of cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics as adjuncts to diagnostic cytology. In collaboration with Dr. Jonathan Fletcher, we have also investigated the ability to use cytologic preparations to monitor treatment response and have developed a robust, cytology-based assay to measure tumor susceptibility to target-specific small molecule inhibitors. More recently, we have implemented the CellSearch instrument for enumerating circulating tumor cells and are embarking on collaborative studies to evaluate their clinical significance as well as their value in understanding the molecular mechanisms of metastasis.
