The foundation of my clinical, research and academic practice is in advancing all aspects of a patient’s care. I have dedicated my academic and research career to the investigation, development and clinical implementation of innovative approaches to improving the delivery and quality of breast cancer radiation treatment. The focal point of my work concerns the minimization of treatment related side effects and complications to improve the quality of life for patients while not compromising the expected benefit of the cancer therapy. This approach serves as the basis of my clinical practice and is an ideology that I stress to those individuals which I mentor. My current and future research protocols will be a continuation of these efforts with projects focusing in using techniques to decrease cardiac and pulmonary toxicity from radiation in patients treated with Herceptin-based chemotherapy, once and twice daily external beam partial breast irradiation (PBI) to complete breast radiation in one or two weeks, and investigation of symptoms, impact on quality of life and early detection and intervention of breast cancer related lymphedema.
