Research Abstract

My current research is focused on developing and testing interventions to improve communication about end-of-life care for patients with serious and life-threatening illness. In collaboration with Atul Gawande, we are testing a Serious Illness Communication Checklist, designed to improve the achievement of patient goals at the end of life, and to support patient and family adjustment and quality of life in patients with cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. We are also conducting a study designed to test an intervention designed to enhance advance care planning in patients who are anticipating high-risk surgery, with the goal of enhancing the provision of goal-consistent care. In addition, I am involved in developing and evaluating competency-based palliative care educational interventions andresearch on end-of-life communication.
