Research Abstract

My main research interest is to describe how insulin resistance in vascular

endothelial cells contributes to endothelial dysfunction and, in turn, complications to

metabolic diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes. We have previously found that

endothelial cell insulin resistance contributes to atherosclerosis by promoting an

activated, proadhesive endothelium with upregulation of vascular cell adhesion

molecule-1 and increased adhesion of leukocytes to endothelial cells. Our current

foucs is how this type of endothelial dysfunction may promote colorectal cancer by

producing a chronic, low-grade inflammation in intestinal mucosa. We study these

mechansims in cell culture models and genetically modified mice subjected to diet-

induced obesity.
