Research Abstract

A major focus of the work in our lab, and with local collaborators, is the development of experimental gene therapy treatments for several major diseases, including breast and pancreatic cancers. The anti-tumor work encompasses the development of improved gene vectors with specific targeting to the malignant cells or their supporting endothelium, as well as therapeutic gene cassettes for delivery. Current effort on the gene vectors is centered on recombinant viral vectors derived from Adeno Associated Viruses (AAVs), a group of small nonpathogenic parvoviruses derived from humans and other primates. Current therapeutic strategies are focused on anti-angiogenic factors, and the delivery of small interfering RNAs against key genes in malignant cells.
