Research Abstract

The Daley laboratory studies mechanisms of normal and leukemic hematopoietic
stem cell biology by focusing on two major areas of interest. First, we study
the classical pathologic condition of hematopoietic stem cells, Chronic
Myeloid Leukemia (CML), in order to understand how the BCR/ABL oncoprotein
distorts blood cell development and induces a myeloproliferative syndrome.
These studies inform our attempts to use novel genetic and pharmacologic
inhibitors to eradicate CML in murine models of the disease. Second, we are
using embryonic stem cells to investigate the earliest events in hematopoietic
ontogeny. Our goal is to identify novel factors that regulate hematopoietic
stem cell development and homing, and to optimize conditions for ex vivo stem
cell expansion for potential applications in cellular and genetic therapy.
