Research Abstract

My principal clinical and research interests include the neurological complications of cancer and anticancer therapy. I has written several articles in the neurology and neuro-oncology literature and is first author of two books devoted to diseases of the spine and spinal cord. More recently, my interests are directed to the intersection of neuroscience and oncology, specifically, the mechanism and prevention of cognitive and other neurological deficits in cancer patients. Laboratory studies have shown that neurogenesis in the hippocampus plays a role in memory and emotion. Since anticancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy can inhibit neurogenesis, this may be a mechanism for these deficits. Strategies to prevent the inhibition of neurogenesis might lead to prevention of such cognitive problems and improve the lives of cancer survivors.
