Research Abstract

I have an 20 year history in conducting psycho-oncology research in five areas. The first is examining the adjustment of patients and family members while on active treatment in Phase III trials in a cooperative clinical trials group [Cancer and Leukemia Group B, CALGB]. Psycho-oncology studies have also been conducted on specific cohorts of patient populations, including prostate, ovarian, breast and endometrial cancer. The second research focus has been the long-term adjustment of cancer survivors, largely those who had been treated on cooperative clinical trials group protocols, including survivors of Hodgkin's disease, adult and child leukemia, and breast cancer. The older cancer patient has become a third area of primary interest, involving testing the impact of different treatment regimens on older cancer patients' quality of life in Phase III trials and the study of older endometrial and breast cancer survivors compared to younger cohorts. Next, I have begun a new area of research concerning cancer-related communication between patients and their spouses/partners. This includes a scale to assess cancer-related communication within a couple. Last, I have begun to test whether just talking with a cancer patient about their quality of life is as helpful in reducing their distress compared to interviewing a patient using standardized questionnaires to determine who is distressed who is then referred to their oncology nurse for further evaluation and referral to an appropriate health professional.
