Research Abstract

Dr. Cannon’s research has explored the experiences of African-American daughters who had functioned as caregivers to their aging parent with the purpose of increasing cultural awareness and sensitivity. Her work in this area has investigated psychosocial factors impacting the African-American caregiver and the context in which they provide care. She has published and presented her work. Through findings from her study, she has worked in consultation with Black Churches as an educator on mental health, and has implemented and facilitated numerous African-American caregiving support groups. As a nurse psychotherapist, Dr. Cannon has found it purposeful in uncovering factors that predispose individuals to stress and assess coping factors in an effort to promote or restore mental health. She is currently writing another article on her work that exposes a broader view of her findings. She has a strong interest in exploring the psychosocial factors in the minority population, particularly, in the areas of cancer and caregiving, health disparities, and instrumentation development of a more culturally sensitive tool that measures caregiving strain in African-Americans.
