Research Abstract

The long-term objectives of this ongoing project is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms which govern the processes of growth and differentiation within the intestinal epithelia. We are particularly interested in understanding the mechanisms involved in normal crypt-villus enterocyte differentiation, as well as those factors which go awry in a number of gut disease states, including inflammatory conditions, prolonged starvation, systemic trauma and sepsis. as well as cancer. Another project is designed to unravel the molecular mechanisms by which thyroid hormone exerts its profound effects on enterocyte growth and differentiation.
