Health Rankings and Assessment: Tools of the Trade

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. ET

Having an understanding of the health of your community in relation to other communities/states can be an important factor in health planning and programming.  The May National Cancer Institute (NCI) Research to Reality cyber-seminar will explore two resources that are designed to help users assess the health of their communities using a variety of data sources, and then to use that data to create solutions and implement programs for a healthier community.

Karen Odegaard from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute will present on the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps resource.  The County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Ranking the health of nearly every county in the nation, the County Health Rankings illustrate what we know when it comes to what’s making people sick or healthy. The County Health Roadmaps show what we can do to create healthier places to live, learn, work and play.

The National Cancer Institute’s Dr. Eric (Rocky) Feuer will then share a new resource in development at the NCI, CI*Rank, which explores rankings, down to the county level,  for mortality, for a number of health issues, and cancer incidence.  Using simulation modeling CI*Rank also demonstrates the complex variability inherent in rankings and how that can alter our perception of risk and assessment of the health of our community.

The final part of the webinar will be dedicated to Q&A and discussion and will offer an opportunity to engage with the presenters, and also to share your own experiences and thoughts on the use of rankings and health assessments to improve the health of your community.
