Cancer Epidemiology Program

The DF/HCC Cancer Epidemiology Program seeks to identify factors that influence cancer incidence and survival to further our understanding of cancer causes and develop prevention strategies that reduce the burden of cancer. The Program also uses epidemiologic techniques to refine our understanding of causal mechanisms and biological pathways for these factors.

The Program’s research activities have served to apply findings from basic biological research into the population setting. This research also serves to inspire basic research to discover mechanisms of action for risk and preventive factors. A key goal is to translate epidemiologic findings for primary and secondary prevention and clinical application. A major emphasis is the integration of molecular data, including biomarkers in tissue and blood, as well as inherited genetic variants. The integration of molecular data into cancer epidemiology studies allows members to identify molecular predictors of cancer risk prognosis that will lead to improved diagnosis, prognostication, and survival. Through the conduct of case-control and cohort studies, more than 60 program members address specific hypotheses around hormonal, genetic, infectious, dietary, occupational, and lifestyle factors for cancer.
