Talk Title: "Taking Calculated Career Risks to Impact the World Through Data Science”
Abstract: I completed my PhD in Biostatistics in 2007 at the University of Washington and the central goal of my career has been to “build things to help people”. Starting with the completion of my PhD I’ve taken a series of calculated career risks to tackle big challenges – including taking a wet-lab postdoc from a dry lab; starting a widely read blog; creating multiple data science series on Coursera; starting a not-for-profit data science training program; founding several companies; and most recently taking on the role of Chief Data Officer at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. I’ll discuss the excitement, and challenges of doing big, hard things in cancer research (and elsewhere); as well as the critical role mentors, supporters, and colleagues have played in my kind of weird career possible.
