Our research interests are focused on understanding the genetics and genomics of human cancer and in developing mouse models for human cancer. We have been and continue to be a part of the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program. Dr. Kucherlapati is the PI of a Genome Characterization Center (GCC) of the progam and the goal of the GCC is to understand the copy number changes and structural aberrations present in many different cancer types. To accomplish this goal, the Center subjects TCGA samples to whole genome sequencing and analyzes the results. The results from this work are integrated with data generated by other Centers to generate a comprehensive understanding of the changes that are critical for cancer development and maintenance. We have also generated a large number of genetically modified mouse models for colon cancer. Many of these models mimic the human cancer and are being used to understand the biology of cancer and to develop new therapeutic approaches.
