Research Abstract

Dr. Kwon is a practicing infectious disease clinician with a Ph.D. in the field of molecular immunology. The focus of his research is understanding the effect of HIV infection on mucosal tissues with a emphasis on cellular immunity. This includes studies of the role of HIV in mediating increased risk of cervical and anal cancer. Both cervical and anal cancer are increasing concerns in the HIV infected population as longevity has significantly increased with the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART). Although the risk of opportunistic infections is diminished in those on ART, rates of these two mucosal cancers remain elevated. Dr. Kwon is the PI on two IRB approved protocols to obtain samples from the cervix and rectum of HIV infected subjects to better understand the molecular and immunologic mechanism of increased cancer risk with HIV. He has also recently published a paper (Adalsteinsson et al, 2013) utilizing novel single cell technologies to better understand colorectal cancer. The hope is that by better understand how HIV infection increases risk of cervical and anal cancer, we may be able to contribute to efforts to develop better diagnostic and interventional tools for these diseases.
