Research Abstract

My background is in the field of neurology and immunology. My laboratory has had a long-term interest in the immunologic aspects of MS and the use of the mucosal immune system to treat autoimmune and other diseases I established and direct the Partners Multiple Sclerosis Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, which combines clinical evaluation, immunologic monitoring and MRI imaging and is the first integrated MS center that brings these disciplines to the individual care of the MS patient. I have endeavored over the years to investigate the underlying immune mechanisms associated with disease progression and response to therapy. This has involved the study of effector cell populations, regulatory T cells and the role of the innate immune system in different stages of MS and development of biomarkers. My laboratory interests include: immunoregulation in the EAE model of MS, mucosal immunology, microglia and immune mechanisms in other neurological diseases including Alzheimer’s disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and brain tumors.
