DF/HCC CURE Program Held Mentor Training Workshops to Empower Mentors
May 13, 2025
The DF/HCC CURE Program led two in-person mentor training workshops at the HMS Countway Library based on the Center for Improvement in Mentored Research Experiences (CIMER) curriculum for their mentors working with CURE high school and college students this summer. The workshops – which were held on April 18 and 25, 2025 – brought together around 30 mentors from BCH, BIDMC, BWH, DFCI, MGH, and UMass Boston with a wide range of mentoring experiences, from research coordinators and associates to established faculty running research labs.
The event featured interactive sessions led by experienced facilitators Brittany Michel, PhD (DF/HCC CURE Program), Jelena Patrnogic, PhD (Director of Graduate Cancer Biology Education, HMS and Curriculum Lead, DF/HCC PATHFINDER) and Brionca Taylor, PhD (UMB-DF/HCC U54 Partnership), focusing on the importance of scientific identity in young trainees, effective communication, aligning expectations, assessing understanding, and fostering positive relationships.
Mentors engaged in group discussions, reflective activities, and thoughtful development of their mentorship practices, sharing insights and strategies to support mentees in achieving their personal and professional objectives. The workshops aimed to empower mentors with the tools necessary to guide and inspire the next generation of leaders, emphasizing the importance of mentorship in cultivating young talented cancer researchers.
