CURE HBCU Program

TO BE ELIGIBLE YOU MUST:

Be a student in good standing at an HBCU
- Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior
Be an US citizen or a permanent resident
Be at least one of the following:
- Be from a racial or ethnic group underrepresented in the sciences (Blacks, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders)
- Be a first-generation college student
- Be from an economically disadvantaged background
Demonstrate strong interest in science
Show interest in pursuing a Biomedical, biotechnology, life Science or health career
Be able to commit to a full-time experience

REQUIRED APPLICATION COMPONENTS INCLUDE:

Completion of an application form
Statement of Interest: A personal statement describing academic and professional interests, interest in the biomedical field, reason for applying to the CURE program and the way(s) in which this experience will help meet their short and long term goals. The typed statement should be a minimum of 500 words.
Official copy of transcript or report card from most current school and year
Current résumé
Letter(s) of Recommendation (maximum of three; one of these letters must be from a science or mathematics teacher/professor).

Application and Eligibility FAQs

- Because the program is primarily funded by federal agencies, it is only open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who can provide their I-551 card number.
- If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, please confirm your application with us before applying.
- No. For purposes of NIH funding, an underrepresented minority is defined as an individual belonging to a particular racial or ethnic group that has been determined to be underrepresented nationally in the biomedical sciences. Underrepresented minorities in the biomedical sciences include Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.
- There is no minimum GPA requirement, but competitive applicants do have a record of academic achievement, especially in recent courses. Their interest in science and research is, in part, demonstrated by the courses they've taken.
- Applicants are not required to have prior research experience.
- All parts of the application are important. The admissions committee is looking for:
  1. a strong statement of interest explaining your goals, research interest and any research experience, and why you want to participate in CURE;
  2. a strong letter of recommendation that says something about your work in the classroom and/or research environment;
  3. a demonstrated interest in scientific research, as shown by coursework, recommendation(s), and research
